IPL 2020 Schedule – A Look At The Announced Schedule and Teams

The IPL is a competitive Indian Twenty20 Cricket League contested each year by franchise teams representing Indian cities. The IPL is the world’s most-attended cricket league and ranks sixth among all the leagues in the sport. The IPL became the world’s first sporting event to be televised live on YOUTUBE in 2010. IPL’s brand value was valued at $3.2 billion in 2014.

The Previous Schedule of IPL 2020

The 13th season of the IPL was slated to run from 29 March to 24 May 2020 but was suspended in March when the Indian government announced the nation-wide lockdown. Since then, the BCCI had bided their time as multi-nation tournaments are forced to postpone to 2021, thus opening up an almost 8-week window for the IPL.

The Present – Decided Schedule

But then IPL Governing Council Chairman Brijesh Patel confirmed that the 19 September to 8 November window is being targeted for the season and the series was being shifted to the UAE. The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 season schedule has now been formally declared by the IPL Governing Council. The season starts on September 19 with a match between Mumbai Indians vs. Chennai Super Kings. The upcoming 13th edition of the IPL will be held in the three venues of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah in the UAE, due to a surge in COVID-19 cases.

Official Statement

In all Abu Dhabi will host 20 round-robin games, Dubai 24, and Sharjah 12. “The season will kickstart on 19th September in Abu Dhabi with a blockbuster clash between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings,” said a statement.

After the opener on Saturday, Dubai will host its first game on the next day in which Delhi Capitals will take on Kings XI Punjab. After Sunrisers Hyderabad’s clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday, the IPL auction will shift to Sharjah on September 22 where Rajasthan Royals will host Chennai Super Kings.

The league phase will run across 46 days, with the last match of the league to be played between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians in Sharjah on November 3. There will be 10 double-headers with the first match starting at 3:30 PM IST.

The first double-header is RCB vs. RR in Abu Dhabi and DC vs. KKR in Sharjah on October 3. All evening matches start at 7:30 PM IST. All in all, there will be 24 matches in Dubai, 20 in Abu Dhabi and 12 in Sharjah. The places for the playoffs and the IPL 2020 final will, however, be revealed later. The schedule was supposed to be out in the last week of August, but the announcement was postponed after 13 Chennai Super Kings (CSK) camp staff tested positive for the dreaded virus.

Conclusion

This would be the second time in the UAE for the IPL, after the tournament’s first 20 matches were staged in Dubai , Abu Dhabi and Sharjah in 2014 due to the general elections in India. It is likely that franchises will set up their bases a month in advance if and when the green light is given-for training and also to comply with any quarantine measures imposed by the UAE government.
