Buying a product needs a lot of research to make the best out of the money you are going to spend. In today’s fast-paced world, we have witnessed an uptick in the market of smartphones, TV & monitors. There are a plethora of products with different technologies such as LCD, OLED, AMOLED, SUPER-AMOLED and more.

In recent times, OLED and AMOLED have emerged as the most sold displays in the market. Before buying any of those two displays make sure you know the difference between the two. Now, let's find out the differences.

Technology Difference in AMOLED & OLED

AMOLED displays are built with Thin Film Transistors (TFT) which consist of storage capacitors that control the states of each individual pixel. TFT incorporates a series of switches that controls the current flowing on each pixel based on the demand. OLED displays work on the emission of light through the thin layers of organic components. OLEDs can be engineered with two or more layers to enhance the efficiency of the device. OLED  displays are independent of a backlight as it can generate its own visible light.

Contrast Ratio Difference in AMOLED & OLED

OLED offers an excellent contrast ratio as compared to AMOLED and is known for deeper blacks. This is a result of a significant amount of control over the pixels and it can be turned off completely. AMOLED offers a faster refresh rate and produces an excellent artificial contrast ratio as each pixel is involved in transmitting light but consumes more power than OLED.

Power Consumption That Separates AMOLED & OLED

AMOLED display demand less power as compared to OLED as each pixel has its transistor and capacitor which results in an efficient usage of power. Moreover, during the emission of light, the heat generated is less and hence it is less power hungry than OLED. Despite the low power consumption the colours offered are sharper and lively. Most smartphones today feature dark mode and most of the apps run with a black background which further elevates the battery performance. A common principle  in AMOLED and OLED is not all the pixels are switched on when on a black screen.

Display Size That Separates AMOLED & OLED

AMOLED displays have no limitation on the display size so it can be tailor made for any dimensions. OLED is restricted to certain display sizes but offers better efficiency and is thinner as compared to LCD. The curved display technology available today is built with the usage of plastic substrates. OLED displays are noticeably thinner as compared to LCDs which results in more brightness and efficiency.

(TFT) Thin film Transistor is the major driver in AMOLED as it supplies power and gets the pixels charged.  (TFT) Thin Film Transistor supplies power only to the Organic Light Emitting Diodes.

Understanding AMOLED Display

Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diodes acronymed to AMOLED is a type of display where the pixels are illuminated by a series of Thin Film Transistors (TFT). TFT charges the  pixels faster and is commonly used in large displays as it does well in distributing the current faster as compared to other displays.

Advantages of AMOLED Display

  • Best in generating true colours.
  • Best Contrast Ratio.
  • Can be easily embedded of any display size.
  • Thickness of the display is significantly less.
  • Best viewing angle.

Disadvantages of AMOLED Display

  • Offers poor outdoor visibility.
  • Shorter lifetime as compared to LED & LCD displays.
  • Less resistant to water.

Understanding OLED Displays

Organic Light Emitting Diodes acronymed to OLED is made up of six different layers and  works like conventional LEDs but uses organic molecules to produce electrons while LEDs use N- type and P-type semiconductors. OLED’s are known to be efficient, thinner and do not require a backlight as compared to LEDs. The future can expect OLEDs to be transparent, foldable or even stretchable as the market evolves. Now let's dive a bit deeper about the design. A Pixel is built on 3 pixels called the sub pixels. The three sections comprise red, green and blue. Colours we see on the screen are a result of the variation of light passing through each pixel based on the colour required. As for LCD displays, it is dependent on a backlight that is distributed on the display. OLED displays do not require a backlight as the light and colour is produced from each diode when the current passes.

Advantages of OLED Displays

  • Consumes less power.
  • Good image quality, improved contrast.
  • Fast refresh rates.
  • Wide viewing angle.
  • Exceptional Durability

Disadvantages of OLED Displays

  • Expensive as compared to LCD.
  • Relatively short Lifetime.
  • Less resistance to water.
  • Less resistance to sunlight.
